• I am a dance artist deeply committed to the transformative power of movement, using my body as a medium to tell stories that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels. My practice is rooted in curiosity, continuously evolving as I seek to explore new ways of combining dance with other forms of art—particularly music and film. I view choreography as an extension of my inner world, where the rhythm of movement is inseparable from the rhythms of sound, creating a space where the two art forms are in constant dialogue.

I am particularly drawn to the potential of dance film to expand the reach and accessibility of the art form. The screen allows me to delve into details, textures, and intimate moments that are often lost on stage, offering a new perspective on movement and its relationship to space and emotion. For me, creating multidisciplinary art is about making dance widely accessible—breaking down barriers and allowing audiences from all walks of life to engage with complex, meaningful stories.

At the heart of my ethos is a belief in the power of collaboration and diversity. I am passionate about connecting with artists and communities across different cultures and disciplines, seeing each encounter as an opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge the boundaries of my practice. My work is a continuous exploration of the human experience, and I strive to create pieces that not only move but also inspire reflection, connection, and transformation.

  • Indi Gordon is a dance artist from Ngunnawal land in southern New South Wales, now based in Naarm (Melbourne). Growing up on a cattle station, Indi was surrounded by the creative influence of her family, many of whom were performers. This early exposure to the arts fostered her passion for dance from a young age. By the age of 10, she began competing in dance competitions, developing a strong technical foundation and a love for storytelling through movement.

Indi’s formal training began at Canberra’s Dance Development Centre, where she completed a full-time ballet program. This intensive experience shaped her discipline and technical proficiency, while her exploration of contemporary and jazz techniques expanded her understanding of movement. Ballet provided a structured base, but her desire to explore more expressive forms of dance led her to pursue broader creative opportunities.

In pursuit of artistic growth, Indi moved to Naarm (Melbourne) to study at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. During her time at VCA, Indi’s practice evolved as she became increasingly engaged in multidisciplinary collaboration. She participated in a range of projects, including Mothers Group at the VCA Muse Festival, Gregory Lorenzutti’s PLANT NATION, and Cunningham’s Ocean (an arrangement) with Melissa Toogood. These experiences broadened her understanding of dance’s potential to communicate complex stories and emotions, both as a performer and choreographer.

A defining moment in Indi’s career was attending the 2023 ImpulsTanz festival in Vienna. This international experience allowed her to connect with the global contemporary dance scene and explore innovative practices from around the world. It also deepened her interest in multidisciplinary art forms, particularly in combining dance with music and film. Indi views dance film as an exciting medium to express intricate movement and emotion that are often hard to capture in live performance, making art more accessible to wider audiences.

Throughout her third year at VCA, Indi became increasingly engaged in collaborative projects that explore the intersections between dance, music, and film. She believes in the power of collaboration to enrich dance and push its boundaries, and her choreography often reflects a strong connection to music. Indi views the integration of different artistic disciplines as essential to her creative process, constantly seeking new ways to elevate her practice and create meaningful, accessible art.

Looking forward, Indi plans to continue her artistic exploration in Europe, engaging with the contemporary dance scene and immersing herself in diverse creative communities. She will also participate in a production assistant internship in Abu Dhabi, where she hopes to gain insight from working with international artists. These opportunities will allow her to expand her artistic vision while continuing to grow as a versatile and open-minded dance artist.

Indi Gordon’s work is driven by a commitment to accessibility, collaboration, and innovation. She aims to make dance more widely available through multidisciplinary mediums, using movement to tell stories that connect people and inspire reflection.
