MOTHERS GROUP TRAILER
BY MANU COATES
Mother’s Group is a creative project that expresses the subtle complexities of perceived women identities and the derived emotions of the feminine experience. The multidisciplinary endeavour incorporates elements of movement, voice, music, and costume design, to serve as a symbolic representation of the conversations shared among women. It aims to shed light on the undercurrent of gender inequality, acknowledging the shared feminine reality and the emotional trauma that is often hidden and accepted by society.
The choreography is a woven tapestry of movements that represent the lived experiences that have shaped the identities of the dancers. It incorporates subtle gestures of restraint, suppression to liberation and empowerment.
The dancer's voice in collaboration with the movement is used in contrast and harmony with the jazz female vocalist creating a rich auditory landscape that mirrors the complexity of the female experience. The costume design is an integral element of the work that purposefully enhances the story telling and enriches the audience experience. Ultimately, the work serves as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of women, offering a message of solidarity and empowerment that resonates long after the final curtain falls.
The work premiered in a season at Muse Festival, presented at VCA campus in July of 2024. The performance featured five dancers and a live vocalist over a 40 minute duration. Through the sharing of personal histories, the ‘Mother’s Group’ collaborators seek to amplify voices and foster dialogue around womanhood and gender power imbalances.
